History of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers

The United Nations General Assembly established the observance in its resolution 57/129, designating May 29—the date of the launch of the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in 1948. Since then, the day has provided an occasion to recognize the contributions of those who serve in peacekeeping operations and to honor the more than 4,400 peacekeepers who have lost their lives under the UN flag.
