AKA is committed to a design-intensive rather that technology-intensive approach. This prioritizes simplicity and modesty which collectively are conducive to user-friendly buildings that are reproducible and flexible and that have a long, efficient lifespan. The chapter will provide background to this design approach and will then present three AKA projects: the Port Melbourne Hostel for particularly vulnerable elderly individuals who would otherwise be homeless; The Odyssey House Family Units for individuals receiving therapy for drug and alcohol addiction and their families; and the Wallara-Wintringham Potter Street Redevelopment, for individuals with disabilities and their elderly parent careers. For each project, the chapter will describe the general purpose of the project, the unique requirements and needs of the users, and how these requirements and needs were addressed in the design response. In doing this, the chapter will illustrate the importance of the holistic approach to architecture and health that that is advocated by AKA.
