Ting-Liang Woo (1893–1969), styled Junyi, was a famous anthropologist, statistician, psychologist, and educator in modern China, and the founder of physical anthropology. Woo was born in January 1893 in Jintan county, Jiangsu province. He was diligent and studious since he was a child. Lacking a mother's love, he experienced a difficult childhood and adolescence, but he still cultivated a hard-working and fighting spirit. In 1920, Woo was admitted to the Department of Psychology at the Nanjing Higher Normal College (later called Southeast University), where he studied under the supervision of Chih-Wei Luh (1894–1970, received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1920), a linguist, experimental psychologist, and educator.
